Clearly defining the cause of acid reflux is a task that medical researches are still working on. However, there are several strong connections between several factors and the onset of pain from heartburn and acid reflux.

  • Overeating
  • Being overweight
  • Eating high fat foods
  • Eating spicy foods
  • Highly acidic foods
  • Lying down after meals

Working to offset any of those situations usually goes a long way toward reducing the symptoms and elminiating your pain.

Some people have even found that cutting down on caffeine helps their heartburn problems.

There are other factors that can predispose you to a higher liklihood of acid reflux. These include:

  • alcohol consumption
  • smoking
  • food alergies
  • certain medications
  • high stress lifestyle
