Acid Reflux Symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person depending on age and severity of the condition. The most common is a burning sensation in your chest and throat, somtimes even a slight regurgitation of acid back into the mouth (truly gross). The more acid is released back into the esophagus, the worse it can feel. Some people are so disgusted by the acid regurgitation they will go ahead and vomit, as children suffering from acid reflux often do.

While the burning sensation (heartburn) is the most recognized symptom, there are others that many people forget about, including:

  • bad breath (halitosis)
  • bitter taste in the mouth
  • wheezing
  • rough or tight throat
  • breathing problems
  • sleeping problems
  • dry cough

The risk for acid reflux disease increases with age. Its no coincidence that nursing homes serve such bland foods all the time, their elderly residents just can't handle spicy food anymore... too much heartburn. Reducing their chances for reflux through diet is critical at their age.

Don't worry though, heartburn has nothing to do with your heart, its named due the pain being in the center of your chest, very near your heart. The acid is seperated from your heart by the walls of your stomach and esophagus, there's no risk of a heart attack.

Is it possible to cure your heartburn? Maybe... if you pay attention to it and make legitimate steps toward proper treatment.
