Acid Reflux Treatment
Site current as of
Since acid reflux is a condition where acid backs up into the esophagus due to a relaxed LES (lower esophageal sphincter), the bulk of the treatement involves digestive related solutions. This includes changing your diet to include more bland items, less spicy, change of lifestyle, reduction in stress and medication. Antacids are helpful but most people don't want to turn them into a regular food group in their diet.
There really is no true cure for heartburn, researches are still searching for the true and defining cause. But since you can drastically reduce your onset of symptoms by making a few adjustments in your life there is hope for more pain free days. The severity of treatmeent depends on the severity of the condition.
Acid Reflux Medication
There are lots of over the counter options to try. If one antacid doesn't work for you, try another. What you choose will depend on the severity of your symptoms. If you are eating them like candy you should speak with your doctor about a perscription option that may be more powerful for you. The strategies differ, some treatments are designed to reduce the level of acid produced so that less is available to back into the esophagus. Other treatements leave acid production levels where they are and instead aim to increase pressure on that lower esophageal sphincter so it will keep the acid in your stomach.
If you are of the herbal mindset you can look for herbal remedies to acid reflux in your favorite health food store. They tend to be milder on your body and less agressive than perscription medications.
Lifestyle Changes Can Lead to Relief

Do your best to reduce stress in your life (as if you didn't want to do that already), quit smoking, let gravity help you by sitting up straighter so that acid is more likely to stay low, alter your diet, and get more exercise.
Of course, in all cases we recommend you seek medical advice if you feel you condition is worse than just basic heartburn.
